As scavengers and predators, American Black Bears play a major role in the ecosystem, keeping deciduous forests clean. When bears come out of hibernation in the spring, they scavenge for food, choosing animal carcasses left from the previous winter. In this way, black bears work to clear the forest floor of decaying debris.
Black bears also play an important role in the ecosystem by foraging. In addition to meat, they will eat just about anything they can find. As black bears rip apart logs or plants to find insects, they hasten the decomposition of forest wood and help to control insect populations. Furthermore, black bears play a part dispersing plant and tree seeds as they consume roots, flowers, grasses, fruits, berries, herbs, nuts and acorns.
